Will The LEGO Movie 2 Be About The Dark Ages?

Empire Magazine in the US have done a large spread on The LEGO Movie, including an interview with the directors of the first film Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The full article isn’t accessible online but there is a snippet of the interview; and it may give us a huge hint about the plot of the sequel.

Warning: There are spoilers for the first movie past this point

Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view?

Obviously Chris Miller was trying to keep that as vague as possible, but when we think about adolescence and LEGO there is one thing that immediately comes to mind – The Dark Ages. For those of you not familiar with the term it describes the period in a persons life when they feel they are too old for LEGO, and start to lose interest in it. Most Adult Fans of LEGO will have experienced the Dark Ages; very few seem to continue playing with LEGO from childhood through to adulthood without interruption.

Could the concept work for a sequel to the LEGO movie? We think it opens up a lot of possible areas to explore. How does life change for Emmett when the child who thought up his adventures starts to lose interest? There is also the character of the sister; if the film is set 4 years after the first then she is likely no longer playing with Duplo. The relationship between older brother and little sister could be as moving as the father-son dynamic of the first film if done well.

After the first film we are quietly confident that the sequel will be great too.
