LEGO Announces 75244 Tantive IV

Star Wars Celebration 2019 is well underway and to celebrate LEGO have today announced 75244 Tantive IV.

75244_prod

The Tantive IV has the honour of being the first ship ever seen on screen, appearing in the opening scene of A New Hope.

This LEGO recreation features 1768 pieces and 5 minifigures – Bail Organa, Princess Leia, Captain Antilles, C-3PO and a Rebel Fleet Trooper, plus an R2-D2.

The biggest point of contention for fans may be the branding behind this set. It’s not marked as UCS or MBS. It also lacks the 20th anniversary branding. It seems a little odd.

The set will officially be available May 3rd for $329.99.

Sadly from the perspective of someone who owns the previous version, this one really isn’t much of an improvement. In fact there are aspects of it that are worse, like the fact that it uses stickers on the front (and those white ones NEVER match the colour of the pieces) and that interior is much smaller.

No denying it looks more sleek and build techniques have improved, but I just wish it’d been something more. Having said that, if I didn’t own the previous version i’d be pumped for this.

Guess i’ll save for the predicted UCS ISD!

The last system scale version’s ‘head’ section isn’t exactly in proportion and the half-cone pieces they used for it aren’t completely opaque either, so the ‘white’ looks very different from the rest of the solid brick construction.

The last version’s engines are also very fragile, and the lower ones on mine almost never stay on, anymore. This one has that sleeker profile and looks like they fixed the engines. I’ll be grabbing this too.

Australian price is yikes. Between that, the horribly out of scale cockpit, and the ugly ass fins, probably wont be picking this one up, especially not at RRP. Gonna build Mortesv’s instead lol.

Maybe I was just overhyped for a true UCS Tantive IV but this thing is disappointing on many levels. The proportions of the cockpit compared to the rest of the ship are wrong. It uses stickers for the cockpit windscreen whereas the previous version was printed. The box art suggests it was suppose to be a UCS set. By that I mean compare it to the UCS Y-wing or Millennium Falcon box art, it’s almost identical minus the actual “Ultimate Collectors Series” writing. Like Betrayal at Cloud City which was changed from UCS to a ‘Master Builder Series’ with an official press release at the last minute to explain the difference, I strongly suspect they realised (too late) that fans would savage this set either way as it doesn’t really fit either category…except on price. Speaking of price, $330 for something with stud shooters…ouch! If it was suppose to be a remake of the previous non-UCS Tantive IV all along then why wouldn’t they use the beautiful 20th Anniversary packaging and put a throwback collectible minifig in there? Given the last one was a 10th Anniversary edition, and it was the first ship to appear on screen, I would have thought this one would make the most sense as a 20th Anniversary celebration. I know Lego is primarily for kids but how many parents will drop $330 on a set with only 6 minifigs? I’m hoping Lego have just had their Rian Johnson moment but come back strong with a 5000+ piece UCS ISD later this year.

This will satisfy me. I’m really very much looking forward to it.

I recently bought the 20th anniversary Slave 1 and was blown away. In my case I’m limited to shelf space and I really want this one on display. Perhaps I’m biased towards non-UCS sets, but this is exactly what I’ve wanted.

I only started over the last couple years and this is perfect for me.
    Really hyped for this sucker.

Even though I’ve the previous version, this is on my list. Will wait for it to be available on eBay though, the price is about $30 more than I’d really want to pay.

I really like it; I have actually owned both previous versions and this is the most accurate of the three (the original UCS has weird proportions).

Yes, the cockpit is a shade large, but not by much and the old versions was a shade small. And while I first thought some aspects were off proportionally – notably the neck – if you look at reference photos of the original model this is actually correcting a tendency to “compress” the ship in earlier versions. The long, sleek look is actually more accurate.

    Great review!

Any idea when this might be available in retailers? Is this an exclusive set?
