2013 Looking Good For The LEGO Group

LEGO Logo

13% revenue increase fueled by strong growth in Asia and new product innovation

The LEGO Group has just released an interim report on 2013 figures, and things are looking good for our favourite toy maker. The standout figure from the report is that revenue for the first half of 2013 was DKK 10,363m compared with DKK 9,134m for the same period last year – an increase of 13%. The LEGO Group also increased its share of the global toy market to approximately 8.8 % – up from 8.6% at the end of 2012.

The report mentions a good reception of the LEGO Chima range. This is welcome news as initial online reaction (mainly the AFOL community) to the theme was somewhat negative.

LEGO Legends of Chima has performed well in its launch phase and is already one of the largest LEGO product themes.

When it was first released LEGO Friends range caused a considerable amount of controversy, but continued growth shows that LEGO got their market research right.

LEGO Friends – a product line launched in 2012 and targeted towards girls – is also experiencing a strong second year, with growth rates significantly higher than the company average.

Another interesting fact from the report illustrates one of the reasons that LEGO is such a trusted brand

0 product recalls has been performed in the first six months of 2013 – since 2009 the LEGO Group has not recalled a product.

The full report is quite lengthy, so we haven’t included it in this article, but it can be found in full here http://aboutus.lego.com/en-us/news-room/2013/september/interim-result-2013

Ghostbusters Reaches LEGO Cuusoo Review – Again!

LEGO Ghostbusters Cuusoo 2

In a first for the LEGO Cuusoo program, two different versions of the same concept will be in a single review. LEGO fans have clearly spoken and are very keen to see a LEGO version of everybody’s favourite ghost catching team.

When the first Ghostbusters project hit the required number of supporters Bricking Around said that it stood a pretty good chance of being produced (if licenses can be worked out). A second project from the same IP also making it to the review is going to create some interesting questions for the LEGO team. One of the key elements of the Cuusoo concept is that project creators get 1% of total net sales of the product. How will LEGO handle this situation? Potentially they could choose to go with one project over the other and award royalties that way, but there does seem to be a little bit of overlap between the two projects.

LEGO’s official response didn’t specifically address the issue

It’s unprecedented to have two projects based on the same licensed property in the same LEGO Review period. While we don’t yet know what the outcome will be, we’re very pleased to see the collaborative spirit demonstrated between both Ghostbusters project creators.

One thing that is clear from this situation is that LEGO fans and/or Ghostbusters fans really want to see a LEGO Ghostbusters set produced. The worst possible outcome would be for neither project to pass review.
