Selected Sets On Sale At Amazon Australia

Amazon Australia Thumb

Ever since Amazon launched in Australia we’ve been hanging out for a decent sale.

There are currently over 50 sets listed as clearance items and some of the prices are actually pretty great. This is marked as a clearance sale so there is no set end date.

You’ll also find an interesting mix of sets on offer.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to factor in postage but this shouldn’t be a huge issue as these items are sold by Amazon rather than third party sellers.

You can see the sets via this link, or see an overview of what is on offer below.

February Set Price Battle: Who’s Got The Cheapest Everyday Prices

January 2018 Price Battle

Back in January I compiled a detailed list of the everyday prices for the new release sets and you all seemed to find that helpful. So today I have trawled through the retailer website to compile a list for the February releases.

These are the stores everyday prices and don’t factor in any sales. There doesn’t actually seem to be any sales on at the moment anyway.

A lot of these sets aren’t showing up on the retailer websites unless you specifically search for them so unfortunately I can’t provide a direct link to each one.

Once again Kmart rocks the pricing. Their prices are either cheapest or equal cheapest for 40 out of the 48 sets on the list. Big W does get in a few great prices. Unfortunately for anybody with only a Target nearby their prices are not amazing.

Here is the important information, the list with the best price for each set. If you scroll right down to the end of the article there is also a full list of prices rather than just the best ones.

Police Charge Two People Over LEGO Theft

LEGO Arrest

The continued popularity of LEGO has unfortunately made it a popular product for criminals looking to make a quick buck. It’s one of the reasons that so many sets now have boxes damaged by security wire. LEGO thieves are literally ruining it for the rest of us.

Over the weekend NSW police raided the house of two people in Vineyard and successfully recovered an assortment of LEGO sets that were reported missing from retailers near Botany Bay. A 28 year old woman has been charged with four counts of larceny and a 48 year old man has been charged with another three counts of stealing.

According to NSW Police the sets were still in new condition, so it seems unlikely these were LEGO fans in desperate need of parts for a MOC.

The pair have been released on bail until their next court appearance later this month.

Review: 60171 Mountain Fugitives

Small City sets are often overlooked for their larger more interesting counterparts. These cheap sets get relegated to stocking stuffers or treats for kids.

Today I am going to be checking out 60171 Mountain Fugitives to answer the question of whether or not this set is a worthy addition to your LEGO purchases.

The Build

60171 Mountain Fugitives 01

This section of my review is probably going to be fairly short and simple because there isn’t a lot of building to this set. In fact there are just 88 pieces, split between three builds.

The first build is the small log. The use of SNOT techniques allows for the log to feature two spots to place minifigures, while the end is nicely capped off with a printed tile.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 06

Next up is the blue ATV. This is a fairly simple build for anybody that has ever built a LEGO vehicle. The addition of the chain at the rear is something a bit different.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 04

The final of the three builds is the tree with a hidden nook for hiding loot. It’s certainly not the most impressive tree build LEGO have ever produced. I do like the way the foliage covering the hole was done.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 02

Overall the building experience is not particularly amazing but with 88 pieces I’m not shocked by that.

The End Result

The build experience is very basic but the end result looks great.

The overall shape of the log is a little odd with the use of bricks as well as the 2×2 rounds but I don’t think there was any way to integrate studs for the minifigures to sit on without adding some squareness to the overall shape. It’s not a deal breaker and having the option of a minifigure sitting on the log is worth the strange shape.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 07

The 2×2 tile with log pattern printing is a fantastic decorative piece and I can see it being well used by moc builders.

The blue colour scheme for the ATV is appropriate for a police vehicle while the front bullbar adds a sense of ruggedness to the look. My only criticism of the ATV part of the set is the light on the back. The blue light on a pole looks a bit odd and I don’t think it’s really necessary. I think having lights on the 1×4 plate with 2 studs would have worked fine.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 05

The chain on the rear of the ATV can be attached to the log and used as a play function.

Lastly we have the tree, which incorporates the main play part of the set. The criminals have dug out a hole in the bottom of the tree to stash the gold bars and covered it with some foliage.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 03

While the tree itself isn’t that impressive the bottom section redeems it. Some nice detailing with the use of grey elements to represent rocks and the movable foliage.

The standout feature to me though is the new beehive element that is attached to the top of the tree. This new element fits over a minifigure head (LEGO officially calls the part a hat) and creates some hilarious story opportunities. The idea of a bumbling criminal with a beehive on his head is wonderful. You’ll have to take the minifigure’s hair piece off before adding the beehive but that’s not really an issue.

The Characters

There are four minifigures included in this set and I’m really pleased that there is a 50/50 gender split. Here’s the lineup…

Female Officer

60171 Mountain Fugitives 08
Our first minifigure is the female police officer. I love her facial expression which makes me think she’s more than willing to play the bad cop role in interrogations. That subtle smirk adds a heap of personality.

The female officer features a combination hat and hair element featuring a nice ponytail. It’s a great piece and I think it would also work outside of a police setting.

Her torso features a vest over the dark blue base and printing of pockets, her badge and a radio. The rear continues the vest printing.

While the torso printing is great the leg printing is quite basic with just two small pockets.

Female Criminal

60171 Mountain Fugitives 13
The female criminal minifigure features another great face print. There are a lot of similarities between this minifigure and the female officer, but this print is a bit more aggressive looking.

Adding to the narrative of the set is the torso printing which features a red open shirt over a classic style striped prison outfit. Obviously this minifigure isn’t just a criminal, she’s an escapee.

The female criminal also comes with a backpack to store the gold bars for her potential getaway.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 14

Male Criminal

60171 Mountain Fugitives 09
While the female criminal has had a chance to grab a shirt to disguise herself a little this character is still just wearing his standard prison outfit. The design is limited to the torso with both the arms and legs being plain. The stripe pattern does continue on the rear of the torso.

Another great face print here. I love the addition of the gold tooth.

This minifigure also features an alternative face print – this version is clearly post-beehive incident. I’m a sucker for anything that has personality and this print is outstanding.

60171 Mountain Fugitives 10

ATV Officer

60171 Mountain Fugitives 11
The second of our police officer minifigures is the ATV driver. This male police officer features a very common face print and the same pants as the female officer.

The male minifigure’s torso is similar to the female one – with the radio and badge – the difference being that this minifigure doesn’t have on a vest.

There is a helmet for the male officer to wear but no alternative hair piece. I like to just assume that he’s a bald officer.

Value For Money

You can get this set for $10 from Kmart without any sale. For $10 you get – 4 great minifigures, a nice ATV, a small tree, some gold bar elements, a new beehive element and the great printed 2×2 log print tile.

I regularly spend over $10 on lunch. This set is great value at that price.

If you have any interest in this years mountain police city sub-theme then grab this set next time you are out. It’s fantastic value and has some hilarious play and storytelling value.

LEGO Reveal Jurassic World Sets For All Ages

Thanks to the LEGO catalogue we already knew that LEGO was bringing out a pretty extensive range of sets related to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom but we didn’t have any idea what those sets would look like.

The full line-up hasn’t been revealed yet but we do now have pictures of one set in each category (Duplo, Juniors and regular sets).

75928 Blue’s Helicopter Pursuit

75928

This is our first regular LEGO set from the movie. It features a minifigure version of Owen (played by Chris Pratt) as well as two other minifigures. The star of Jurassic World sets is always the dinosaurs and this set features the velociraptor named Blue. The helicopter is quite nice and features a large single element windscreen.

See the other sets below.

Review: 41333 Olivia’s Mission Vehicle

The Friends theme is getting a reboot in 2018. Not only are the characters redesigned but the theme has a new feel to it. Everything seems to be a bit more colourful and cartoonish than before.

The most radically different of the Friends characters is the 2018 version of Olivia, so I was keen to grab a set with her in it to review.

Here is my look at 41333 Olivia’s Mission Vehicle

Happy 60th Birthday To The LEGO Brick

60 Years Logo 2

January 28, 1958, at 13:58

That is the time and date recorded on the original Danish patent for the LEGO Brick we know and love. While the LEGO Group began producing a plastic brick in 1949 it was not until 1958 that the LEGO brick we know today was born. It took several years of iterations to find the iconic design, which has not been changed significantly since. In fact bricks from 1958 would still be compatible with bricks produced in 2018.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the LEGO Brick and as you know the 60th anniversary promotion is now live on the website. There are also several sets dedicated to the classic building experience, each with a special printed tile to commemorate the event.

I don’t want to write a huge history lesson, because I think the event would be much better celebrated by telling you all to go build something. Dig out those bricks or dust off a set and really celebrate the design of the LEGO brick.

60 Years of the LEGO Brick Promotion Now Live

I know that a lot of people have been hanging out for this promotion and I’m happy to report that it is now live.

Spend over $200 and the 40290 60 Years of the LEGO Brick set will be added to your cart.

40290-1

This promotional set features microscale versions of 4 iconic LEGO sets; 6399 Airport Shuttle, 375 Castle, 6285 Black Seas Barracuda and 928 Space Cruiser And Moonbase.

The website doesn’t feature the terms and conditions at this stage but I’ll update when they become available. Be warned that this is a highly anticipated promotion and it could sell out, it’s hard to know how many LEGO produced.

If you get a city set you’ll also get the Hotdog Stand promotion at the moment.

Thanks to Brad for letting me know this was live.
