Disney Minifigure Series For 2016?

LEGO and Disney have been partners for quite a while now. It’s a partnership that has been responsible for a heap of LEGO related products; all of the new Marvel and Star Wars sets fall under the Disney licensing umbrella.

One thing that we haven’t seen is classic Disney characters making their appearance in standard LEGO form. There is Duplo Mickey and Minidoll princesses but no Disney Minifigures. That could be set to change next year with the release of a Disney Collectible Minifigure Series.

Disney Minifigures 2016

There hasn’t been any official confirmation of this rumour, but it has appeared via a few sources. The current reports place this for a May release with Captain Hook and Peter Pan included in the lineup.

What do you think of the idea of a Disney Minifigure series? Amazing or terrible?

First Look At The 2016 Star Wars Buildable Characters

There seemed to be a mixed (but generally positive) reception to the Star Wars Buildable Character range when they went on sale in Australia. Luckily for fans of the range it seems that LEGO is bringing out a second batch in January with characters from the Force Awakens.

The first picture of these has appeared via the US LEGO Club Magazine and they look pretty great (Click on the picture for a big version).

2016 Star Wars Buildable Characters

The six characters includes are: Poe Damaron, Finn, Rey, Captain Phasma, First Order Stormtrooper and Kylo Ren.

I suspect the characters wearing helmets are going to be more popular as they seem better suited to the style.

The Brick Bank set features a large bank and laundromat in a corner building. The set looks to have a good level of internal and external detail. From the additional images it seems that the Brick Bank vault may not be safe for long.

The set features 5 minifigures and 2,380 pieces. No official Australian price yet but we’ll share that as soon as we know.

Be sure to check out the press release and gallery of high resolution images below.

These sets should be available early 2016 later this year.

First Look At LEGO Angry Birds

While many assumed that the mobile game Angry Birds had started to fade from popular culture, it now appears that there is no escape. There is an Angry Birds movie coming out next year and LEGO are getting on board to produce a range of sets to tie in with the film. After starting out as a rumour earlier in the year, we now have a first look at the official LEGO Angry Birds line.

LEGO Angry Birds Teaser

From the teaser it looks like the birds are going to be large moulded pieces, which is not unexpected – a standard minifigure shape wasn’t going to work for these sets. The design reminds us of the animals in the Friends line.

The movie could be a surprise hit and the LEGO range a hit alongside it, but we don’t think many people had LEGO Angry Birds at the top of their wishlist.

DC Super Hero Girls To Become New LEGO Range

It’s been a bit of a slow period for LEGO news, but we have come across this potentially interesting announcement from Warner Bros and DC Entertainment;

A New Super Hero Universe Designed Just For Girls

When they say universe, they really seem to mean it; this new concept will include “Digital Content, TV Specials, Made-For-Videos, Publishing, Toys, Apparel and Other Products.”

Here is the initial description from the press release;

Beginning in Fall 2015, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Mattel join forces to launch DC Super Hero Girls, an exciting new universe of Super Heroic storytelling that helps build character and confidence, and empowers girls to discover their true potential.  Featuring DC Comics’ most powerful and diverse line-up of female characters as relatable teens, DC Super Hero Girls will play out across multiple entertainment content platforms and product categories to create an immersive world.

Developed for girls aged 6-12, DC Super Hero Girls centers on the female Super Heroes and Super-Villains of the DC Comics universe during their formative years—prior to discovering their full super power potential. Featuring a completely new artistic style and aesthetic, DC Comics’ icons such as Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumble Bee, Poison Ivy, Katana and many more make their unprecedented teenaged introduction. Each character has her own storyline that explores what teen life is like as a Super Hero, including discovering her unique abilities, nurturing her remarkable powers and mastering the fundamentals of being a hero.

So what does this have to do with LEGO? Well even though the press release mentions partnership with Mattel (who now own Mega Bloks) they have decided that The LEGO Group will be the Exclusive Construction Partner. This means that in early 2016 there will be a new line of female focused DC Super Hero Girls LEGO sets.

At this stage we don’t know anything about the range, but our guess is that these sets will feature minidolls rather than standard minifigures. This seems to be LEGO’s preferred option for female focused sets.

We can’t wait to see the products; the biggest complaint with the Friends line has always been the stereotypically feminine storylines and lack of action. A new female focused range with characters that kick butt can only be a good thing, right?
