2019 Had Some Weird Play Experiences

As we ease in to 2020 let’s have a look back at some of the weird stuff from 2019.

Throw your LEGO off stuff, it’ll be fun!

parachute

2019 was the year that LEGO encouraged fans to drop their LEGO off a high place with the Sky Police sub-theme and it’s new parachute element. The three part parachute features a circle of lightweight material with two sets of plastic straps. Finally LEGO has stepped up to the plate to take on those cheap plastic parachute people you find in Christmas crackers. I didn’t expect this to be as fun as it is but the parachute is actually pretty cool. I’m surprised I haven’t seen it pop up in more MOCs.

Just add water!

Emma’s Art Studio features some lovely pastel colours but it also has a weird play feature with the included canvas. What looks like a blank piece of blue material is transformed with a liberal application of water. As the water soaks in you’ll see a paw print pattern suddenly appear on the fabric. It’s a bit strange to see the LEGO box instruct you to get your LEGO set wet.

Shoot the fire!

shoot-the-fire

Another weird one from the LEGO City theme. This time it’s the fire sub-theme. Several of these sets came with an interesting inclusion – a rubber bulb attached to a tube. Squeeze the bulb and blue elements representing water shoot out. This is actually a feature that worked quite well. It also had a distinct advantage over standard stud shooters in that it was a self-contained unit and doesn’t spread 1×1 rounds all over your house.

There’s an app for that!

LEGO has had several attempts of mixing real building and digital play. In 2013 they released Life of George. In 2014 they released LEGO fusion. Neither made their way to Australia. Well LEGO’s latest attempt was the Hidden Side theme which stepped up the Augmented Reality concept to another level thanks to advances in technology and smartphone cameras. These sets allow you to overlay a digital world over your physical builds. Judging by the deep discounts on these sets Australia wide, I don’t think it’s been a hit. I’ll be having a dig into that a bit more in a separate article.

What other weird play features did you come across in 2019?

Several sets mentioned in this article were provided to me by LEGO at my request. Opinions expressed are my own.

Boxing Day 2019 Round-up

Boxing Day isn’t usually the best day for LEGO sales. Retailers generally choose to discount boring stuff like clothes and homewares. They probably figure that with Santa giving out so many toys yesterday that’s not what people are looking to buy. Thankfully there are still some sales.

Here’s what I’ve found:

Amazon – Various [affiliate links]

  1. Technic, Ninjago & Overwatch
  2. Star Wars & Marvel
  3. DUPLO, Friends, Juniors & Toy Story 4
  4. City & Creator

David Jones – 20% off selected

While DJs usually offers a flat discount on everything this time they are doing 20% off a range of sets.

Myer – 50% off second item [affiliate link]

If you have a few things to get this Myer offer is pretty appealing. Get 50% off your second item when you buy two or more LEGO sets. Standard exclusions seem to apply.

Toys R Us – Selected sets on sale

A range of sets are reduced. No flat percentage off so some stuff will be better value than others.

Merry Christmas

I just want to wish everybody a merry Christmas. I hope your day is filled with joy, laughter and LEGO.

Let me know in the comments if Santa had some LEGO surprises for you this year.

Here’s hoping for some great Boxing Day sales.

LEGO City Space Sets Have Me Excited For The Future

LEGO City is one of those themes that has never really blown me away. I like it just fine but it can feel a bit too grounded. Or sometimes a bit too fantastical – I’m looking at you Sky Police. It has then come as a bit of a surprise that the 2019 City Space sets have completely won me over.

I recently built 60227 Lunar Space Station and while a space station orbiting the moon is inherently cool, this set has an extra cool factor. This set is inspired by actual NASA mission objectives. In fact all of the 2019 City Space sets are based on real projects and concepts from NASA.

NASA has a goal to return humans to the surface of the moon by 2024 and beyond that to send a human to the surface of Mars. This project is called Artemis, named for the twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology. Just like the Apollo project, Artemis will feature a series of different missions each with different objectives. One major difference between Apollo and Artemis is that this time NASA wants to go to the moon to stay.

The Lunar Gateway will be an orbital space station built in various stages. It will serve as a base for landing crews, a laboratory and communications hub. Essentially providing the same role that Columbia did during Apollo 11, but on a much grander scale.

Toys R Us Is Coming Back

It seems that Toys R Us is returning from the dead.

Online retailer Hobby Warehouse are reviving the brand, with plans to launch online and eventually have a physical presence too.

Those hoping things will immediately return to how they were you may want to temper your expectations slightly. This is a new entity and as such all of the exclusives will need to be renegotiated.

It’s certainly a good thing in terms of competition. I’m treating this news with curious interest – Hobby Warehouse loves to get in on an eBay sale, but their prices are not always spectacular.

You can find out more details about the relaunch on the Toys R Us website. The current plan is for a June 12th online launch.

Happy Mother’s Day

I know there are plenty of AFOL Mums out there in the world, so I just wanted to wish every single one of you a Happy Mother’s Day.

Mother

I hope you all got spoiled not only with LEGO but also time to build it.
