Review: 21313 Ship In A Bottle

LEGO fan Jake Sadovich had what many would consider a crazy idea – building a ship in a bottle out of LEGO. Not just the ship, but the bottle too.

Well that crazy idea eventually landed on the LEGO Ideas website and very quickly gained the 10,000 votes needed to become an official LEGO set.

After extensive and polarising redesigns from the LEGO set designers the final set is now available to purchase.

Does the set capture the magic of a ship in a bottle? Have the design choices ruined the original idea? Read on to find out what I think of 21313 Ship In a Bottle.

The latest LEGO Ideas product has officially been announced and I suspect that a lot of people are going to want this as a display piece.

Introducing 21313 Ship in a Bottle

Based on the original idea by JakeSadovich77 the Ship in a Bottle set features a brick built ship named the Leviathan inside a wonderfully designed brick-built bottle. The set also features an impressive display stand.

There are a lot of fantastic details on this set, the cork in the bottle looks great, as does the compass on the display stand. Creating large clear structures is not something that is normally associated with LEGO bricks and I think the final design did an impressive job of creating the bottle. I love the wax seal element on the bottle too.

The ship itself features three sets off sails, all featuring a printed element with a representation of the Leviathan beast.

To add to the overall aesthetic over 280 translucent-blue 1×1 round plates are included to represent water.

My only real complaint about the set is that the fan model featured rigging created with string while the final model doesn’t. I think it added to the overall look of the ship and I would have liked to see it incorporated in the final model. It may be a case of it was to difficult to add that in to a retail model.

The set will be released February 1st (no VIP release) with an Australian RRP of $119.99.
