BrisBricks 2014 LEGO® Fan Expo – Photos and Review

BrisBricks 2014

The second half of the year is always lacking in public holidays, so when they do come a long you really need to make the most of them. That is most likely why BrisBricks used the second last long weekend before Christmas to host their 2014 Expo.

Ticketing
Tickets were primarily sold online, with limited tickets also available at the door. Ticketing was based on pre-determined session times to spread the crowds out. BrisBricks stuck with the same online ticketing system they have used for most of their events, and as usual there were no problems getting a ticket. I originally planned to attend the 10:30 AM session on the Sunday, but that had actually sold out before I had a chance to purchase a ticket. I instead opted for the 2:30 PM session, and I am glad I did. While still busy, I was told the morning had been packed.

As is common these days I showed up with my phone in hand and was quickly inside. Despite arriving right when my session kicked off their was no large line. I believe that long lines had formed before the first session on each day, but that is to be expected.

The Venue
This year’s event took place at the same venue as 2013 – The Chandler Arena. The comments I made last year were also true for this year; the venue is spacious, reasonably lit and much cooler inside than out in the sunny spring day.

While I arrived after lunch, there were still several food vendors offering families a variety of choices. There were lots of kids sitting outside having a drink and playing with the LEGO they had purchased.

For Sale
This year’s line-up of retailers was larger than I had seen at previous events. This is certainly something that I appreciate; having a good range of retailers means that fans have a chance to compare prices. I have been to a few events with an exclusive retailer present, and prices there seemed quite high. There was also a good variety of products on sale; common and rare sets, customised items and even bulk parts. I didn’t buy anything myself, but it was difficult to avoid the temptation.

The MOCs
Brisbane has some incredible building talent. Despite going to almost every Brisbane LEGO event I am still blown away every time. It seemed this year that the builders had gone all out to create new displays, as there was heaps I hadn’t seen before.

Here are my top picks:

  • The Friends Ski Lodge – The building was very well designed. (Images 021 – 024)
  • Huge Classic Space Display – This massive display contained a heap of great details, and who doesn’t love classic space? (Images 046 – 069)
  • Winter Village – Another well designed winter themed display. (Images 095 – 101)
  • Master Builder Meeting – This build does a great job of capturing the craziness of Cloud Cuckoo Land. (Image 161)
  • Batcave – This one didn’t turn out great in the photo due to it being quite dark, but it was a great build (Image 203)
  • Star Wars Trench Run – Such a classic scene perfectly captured in brick (Images 269 – 271)
  • Dinosaur Skeletons – These may not be as large as the other displays but they were some of my favourites. I’d love to have these on my desk. (Images 292 – 294)

The BrisBrick group just keeps on impressing. The 2014 event was probably their best yet, and they have set a high bar for next year. As a Brisbane LEGO fan I am incredibly spoilt to live in the same city as so many talented builders.
