2017 Advent Calendars – Day 4 – City, Friends & Star Wars

It’s been a horrible rainy day here in Brisbane. Hopefully the day 4 builds are better than the weather.

2017 Advent Calendars – Day 1 – City, Friends & Star Wars

Welcome to this year’s advent calendar coverage! I will be looking at all three calendars in the lead-up to Christmas.

Unfortunately I have been unwell all day and have only just managed to get today’s post up but it’s still December 1st in Perth. Hopefully the remaining days will feature slightly better photos and the post will be more timely.

Each day’s builds will be hidden after a break so you won’t get spoiled on the homepage. Read on to see what Day 1 has for us.

Olivia Looks Different In The 2018 Friends Sets

Pictures have started appearing online for some of the 2018 sets. While I haven’t had a chance to collate these and share them I noticed something odd when checking out the 2018 Friends sets.

Olivia isn’t the Olivia we are all used to. In fact it seems that she has been completely redesigned.

Here is what Olivia currently looks like…

And here is what Olivia looks like in the 2018 sets…

Olivia 2018

There are numerous differences. New Olivia has a different hair colour and style, she now wears glasses and her skin tone is slightly darker.

I don’t have any issue with the Friends lineup having a bit more diversity in terms of skin tone but I feel like LEGO should have done that from the start. Completely redesigning an existing character is odd and likely to cause issues for kids when their favourite LEGO Friend suddenly looks completely different.

I also think the glasses are a bit disappointing. Why? Because Olivia has always been the nerdy character with an interest in science and technology. Giving the character with an interest in STEM glasses feels like a lazy stereotype.

What do you think of the change? Is this an outrage, or a non-issue?

On Sale: 20% Off City & Friends + Selected Sets On Sale At Target

Target 200x200

I think that we can probably expect the major retailers to have some LEGO on sale from now until Christmas and the latest catalogue from Target is proving that point with a few different offers.

First up is a 20% off sale on two popular themes – Friends and City. Target prices can be lower than RRP so a 20% off sale works out to be fairly decent.

The catalogue also features a range of sets on sale. The catalogue sets cover a variety of themes beyond City and Friends.

The sale starts tomorrow (November 9th) and runs until November 29th. You can view a list of the sets included below, or view the catalogue for yourself here.

Review: 41318 Heartlake Hospital

LEGO Friends has the advantage of being set, for the most part, in a single fictional town. This setting gives the designers a lot more room to play around with what is needed in a city, and build sets around that. It has made for a theme with a surprisingly diverse selection of locales. The latest addition to the city is a building that every town needs – a hospital.

Style

All of the LEGO Friends sets have an unmistakable colour palate and overall feel to them, and that is also true for the Heartlake Hospital. The building features splashes of bright colour all through the interior and exterior. The pinks, purples and blue all visual hallmarks of a LEGO Friends set.

On Sale: 20% Off City, Friends & Duplo At Myer

Myer Logo Generic 200px

Myer are getting in to the School Holiday spirit with a new Toy Sale offer. Despite having sales all year that cover everything this offer is limited to just three themes. They are popular themes but there is a lot of LEGO not included.

The 20% off City, Friends & Duplo is an online only offer. At this stage there doesn’t seem to be any obvious end date. The wording on the website makes it seem that there will be more offers later.

You can view the ranges here: City, Friends & Duplo.

Thanks to my wife who spotted this sale last night.

Review: 30400 Gymnastics Bar

I make no secret of the fact that I am a big LEGO Friends fan. The sets are almost always well designed and I actually don’t have a problem with the Minidolls.

When my local Woolworths finally got in the polybag range they are now offering this was the first set I grabbed.

30400 Gymnastics Bar

30400 Gymnastics Bar (1)

This set contains a relatively small part count of just 26 elements, as well as a single minidoll.

The included minidoll is Naomi – who is not one of the main LEGO Friends characters. It’s nice to expand my Heartlake City citizen collection, but some buyers may be disappointed that it doesn’t include a more well-known character. Despite this the minidoll is great. Naomi features blue eyes, a freckled face and dark brown hair. She is presented here wearing a great green spotted top and purple shorts. Overall it’s a really nice minidoll.
