LEGO Announces Plants Made From Plants

This year will see a major milestone in LEGO’s move towards a renewable future. A range of plant elements included in upcoming sets will be made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane.

If you didn’t already know, the current LEGO elements are currently produced using a petroleum based plastic. That means they are made from oil, which is not a renewable resource.

LEGO’s long term goal is to move completely to renewable resources, and these new elements are a first step.

The new sustainable parts will all be plant elements to start with.  These parts are made with polyethylene, which is a soft, durable and flexible plastic and while they are based on sugar-cane material, they are technically identical to those produced using conventional plastic.

I will certainly be looking to check out the new parts when they start appearing in sets but from what LEGO are saying I’m not going to notice the difference.

It’s great to see such a huge global brand making progress towards a more sustainable future.
