On Sale: Toys R Us Bricktober Sale & Promotion

It’s almost October, or as Toys R Us like to call it Bricktober!

Every year in late September or early October Toys R Us runs some sort of LEGO giveaway. This year there are two different minifigure packs on offer. Click on the picture for a better look.

Toys R Us Bricktober 2017 Details

Here are the details…
Set 1: Spend $75 or more from September 27th to October 2nd to receive a set of 4 LEGO Ninjago minifigures. These minifigures are based on the TV show not the Ninjago Movie.
Set 2: Spend $75 or more from October 3rd to 10th to receive a set of 4 LEGO Batman Movie minifigures. The lineup of minifigures is exclusive to this promotion.

These packs are not available to purchase separately.

They also have a modest sale on to make spending that $75 a little more tempting. You can view the included sets below, or view the catalogue for yourself here. The sale runs for the same period as the promotion – from September 27th until October 10th. Note that Toys R Us sales do start online a day early (tonight) but you may not get the Ninjago minifigures until tomorrow.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Review

The LEGO Movie turned out to be a massive hit that was hugely popular with audiences both young and old. It’s no surprise that everybody involved wanted more of that success, so LEGO Batman got his own movie. Now the popular LEGO theme Ninjago gets the big screen treatment with The LEGO Ninjago Movie – in cinemas from today (no Australian delay this time).

If you aren’t familiar with the world of Ninjago then don’t worry – this movie uses the setting and characters from the theme/show but it is a completely stand-alone story. I have only seen a few episodes of the television show myself and I had no problem understanding what was going on. It’s possible that there were some references that I may have missed but this isn’t a direct adaption or continuation of the show.

I won’t get in to detailed spoilers here, but I will discuss some basic plot points.

One thing I will say is that the opening scene of this film caught me completely off guard. It’s an opening that on reflection I really liked, but not at all what I was expecting. Some reviews have given this away so be careful if you are reading others.

Even though this is a standalone film it is not an origin story. It’s not Wu finding a group of teenagers with attitude and teaching them ninja skills. The “secret ninja force” is already established and there is a regularity to life in Ninjago City – Garmadon attacks, he is stopped by the ninjas, repeat.

Review: The Ninjago Movie Minifigures

The Ninjago Movie looks like it is going to be a heap of fun, and like the LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman Movie before it LEGO have released a series of tie-in minifigures. With 20 different minifigures in this series there is a lot to cover, so lets get stuck in to it.

There are two parts to this review, first up brief review of each minifigure with pictures. The second part is a full 360° degree look at each minifigure. I have grouped the minifigures into four different batches for the 360° looks; Ninja Crew, Garmadons, Shark Army & Others.

The Minifigures

Lloyd

Lloyd

Lloyd is undoubtedly the main character of the movie and this minifigures features him in his ninja outfit. The two-part ninja mask works well but I am sure that a lot of kids are going to misplace the smaller neck part in time. The optional hair element gives you some flexibility in play/display options. The highlight of this minfigure may just be the printed tile. The blue on white is quite striking and the design perfectly matches Lloyd’s mech. The printing on the torso reads NINJA.

The Ninjago Movie Alphabet

If you have been watching the trailers and checking out the sets from The LEGO Ninjago Movie you may have noticed that they all feature a strange foreign language. Well that language is actually English, but with a special new alphabet designed by the LEGO Ninjago Movie team.

Bricking Around in Ninjago

With the sets released people got to work on deciphering the language, but LEGO have made that a lot easier with a new website for the film - ninjagolanguagetranslator.com. The site allows you to input a message using the standard English alphabet and then switch to the Ninjago alphabet (or vice versa).

I have also gone to the trouble of creating a handy guide that you can print out to translate sets as you are building them.

Ninjago Alphabet GuideWith enough study you may even be able to read Ninjago.

Free Kai’s Dojo Pod Now Available From LEGO Online

With the Ninjago Movie getting closer and the highly antipated Ninjago City released soon LEGO have today released a new promotion on their online store.

Free Kai’s Dojo Pod with any Ninjago purchase

Ninjago Kai Dojo Pod

Surprisingly this offer has a fairly long run time – August 14th to 29th October 2017 (or while stocks last).

The qualifier for this says Ninjago sets, so regular non-movie Ninjago sets should count.

I did a quick test and both the Kai’s Dojo Pod and Iconic Cave set were added to my cart with a Ninjago set over $45.

Thanks to Chris for first letting me know about this offer

Introducing 70620 Ninjago City

The LEGO Facebook page has released details of an absolutely epic and completely unexpected new set from the Ninjago Movie.

70620 Ninjago City

70620 Ninjago City

At 4867 pieces this multi-level masterpiece is the third largest LEGO set ever produced and by far the biggest Ninjago set.

This set is absolutely packed with incredibly details and styling. The aesthetic is a wonderful blend of modern and classical Japanese-esque design.

The bottom level features translucent blue and green elements to create water. There is also a traditional fish market with fish and crab elements. A house with multiple rooms is also included on this level.

The second level features a fashion store, construction site and a comic book store. The star of level two may just be the crab restaurant with a brick-built crab entrance sign and a crab-grilling function.

Level three includes a radio tower and a rooftop sushi bar with a working sushi conveyor belt. Lloyd’s apartment is also included on this level.

There are an incredible 16 minifigures in this set Jay, Kai and Lloyd Garmadon (each with new-for-August-2017 high school outfit decoration), Green Ninja Suit, Misako, Jamanakai Villager, Sally, Ivy Walker, Konrad, Severin Black, Tommy, Guy, Juno, Mother Doomsday, Shark Army Gunner and Officer Noonan, plus Sweep the maintenance robot. A highlight would have to be the Galidor printed torso – a great reference for LEGO fans in the know.

There are so many details I urge you to check out the full set description and gallery of over 30 images below.

This set has an Australian RRP of $499.99 and will be available September 1st.

Review: 30426 Stealthy Swamp Airboat

I am not the biggest Ninjago fan but while looking at the available polybags at my local Woolworths, this set caught my eye.

30426 Stealthy Swamp Airboat

30426 Stealthy Swamp Airboat (1)

This 2017 polybag set contains 40 parts and a single minifigure.

The set includes a Cole minifigure, as he appears in the 2017 lineup. His torso is dark bluish grey with extensive black and brown printing on the front and rear. The print is quite detailed and features a robe and rope pattern. This pattern continues on to the legs which have front printing. The arms provide a nice contrast in black.

The First Ninjago Movie Trailer Is Here

Ninjago Movie poster

While The LEGO Batman Movie is getting all the attention at the moment it’s not the only LEGO film hitting cinemas this year.

After being one of LEGO’s most popular original IPs Ninjago is making the move from cartoon to movie.

Featuring an all new voice cast (to the disappointment of some) and a standalone story The LEGO Ninjago Movie will be released in Australia on September 21st. Surprisingly that release date is actually in-line with the US for once.

Here is the first trailer…
