The LEGO Ninjago Movie Review

The LEGO Movie turned out to be a massive hit that was hugely popular with audiences both young and old. It’s no surprise that everybody involved wanted more of that success, so LEGO Batman got his own movie. Now the popular LEGO theme Ninjago gets the big screen treatment with The LEGO Ninjago Movie – in cinemas from today (no Australian delay this time).

If you aren’t familiar with the world of Ninjago then don’t worry – this movie uses the setting and characters from the theme/show but it is a completely stand-alone story. I have only seen a few episodes of the television show myself and I had no problem understanding what was going on. It’s possible that there were some references that I may have missed but this isn’t a direct adaption or continuation of the show.

I won’t get in to detailed spoilers here, but I will discuss some basic plot points.

One thing I will say is that the opening scene of this film caught me completely off guard. It’s an opening that on reflection I really liked, but not at all what I was expecting. Some reviews have given this away so be careful if you are reading others.

Even though this is a standalone film it is not an origin story. It’s not Wu finding a group of teenagers with attitude and teaching them ninja skills. The “secret ninja force” is already established and there is a regularity to life in Ninjago City – Garmadon attacks, he is stopped by the ninjas, repeat.

New Ninjago Movie Trailer Reveals An Unexpected Threat

We already know that Garmadon is the main villain of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, but this new trailer reveals what could be an even bigger threat to Ninjago City.

I don’t want to spoil it here so I suggest you watch for yourself below.

This new trailer was shown the the crowd at the Comic-Con panel for the film.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie is released here September 21st, which unlike the previous LEGO Movies is not delayed. Australia will actually be one of the first places in the world to see it.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the trailer.

Ninjago Movie Minifigure Series Revealed

Over the last few days the LEGO NINJAGO Facebook page has been revealing the full lineup of 20 minifigures that will form the LEGO Ninjago Movie series.

Rather than posting each batch as they were revealed I have waited so that I can post them all for you in one post. You can find a gallery of all 20 at the end of the article.

Ninjago Movie Minifigures Garmadons

There are three different versions of Garmadon included in the set. First up is Flashback Garmadon; obviously this minifigure appears in a flashback scene. The brown suit with yellow shirt is great as is the printed tile with a picture of a volcano.

Next up is Volcano Garmadon; the printed volcano pyjamas are fantastic as is the oriental bowl in sand green.

Finally there is a “regular” Garmadon, as he is likely to appear for most of the film.

Ninjago Movie Minifigures Lloyds

As the main protagonist there are two versions of Lloyd – Lloyd Garmadon with his green hoodie and beautifully printed bowl, and a version just called Lloyd, this time in his ninja attire and featuring blueprints for a dragon.

The rest of the ninja crew

There are variants of the other ninja and Master Wu. Cole with a boombox and AC DC inspired shirt. Jay Walker with a selfie stick and great orange scarf element. Kai Kendo with two Kendo sticks and optional mask. Zane in a wintery outfit. Nya with two wooden training swords. And finally Master Wu with a box of corn flakes.

Shark Army

There are several members of the shark army included. Shark Army General #1 with scaly blue outfit and pink drink, Shark Army Angler with a mace and awesome angler fish headpiece, Shark Army Octopus again with a great headpiece and Shark Army Great White with burn marks on his outfit and a flat battery headpiece.

Ninjago City Citizens

All of the remaining figures are great. There is the Sushi Chef, Gong & Guitar Rocker, GPL Tech, Misako (Lloyd’s mum) and the absolutely wonderful looking N-POP Girl.
