What’s In A Name? UCS vs MBS

I think it’s fair to say that 75098 Assault on Hoth was not well received by the AFOL community. For many it was a set that did not deserve the Ultimate Collectors Series badge – something that LEGO themselves now seem to be conceding.

When 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City was announced I mistakenly called it “the next UCS” set. It turns out that it’s not. 75222 is actually a Master Builder Series set.

So what is the actual distinction between an Ultimate Collector Series set and a Master Builder Series set? It’s actually fairly obvious. Here’s the official statement from LEGO…

The Master Builder Series models are large playsets and beside being complex builds they are characterized by having many play features and functions, interior details as well as a range of minifigures. Ultimate Collectors series will remain highly detailed display models providing complex builds with a focus on authenticity and both Ultimate Collectors Series and Master Builder Series will continue as a way to highlight the unique characteristic of each style of model.

This likely means that in the future large LEGO Star Wars releases will fall in to one of two categories – UCS or MBS. As an AFOL I appreciate the UCS sets more than the Master Builder sets but I like that they are offering something for those fans who are more experienced builders but still like to recreate scenes from their favourite films.

What about Assault on Hoth? It’s clearly marked as a UCS set.

This certainly raises a bit of a dilemma for UCS completionists – The set clearly fits better in the Master Builder Series range, but as the catalyst for that range’s creation it was released before that distinction was made. Do you still consider Assault on Hoth a UCS set?

The Next Star Wars UCS Set Is 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City

Some of the most iconic moments in the original Star Wars trilogy all took place in The Empire Strikes Back, specifically in Cloud City.

75222 Betrayal at Cloud City captures several iconic scenes in a huge diorama, split into 4 distinct sections. Scenes included are; the galaxy’s most interesting dinner party, where the heroes discover Darth Vader waiting for them; Han Solo being frozen in Carbonite, uttering that classic “I know” line; the showdown between Luke and Vader, where Luke learns the truth about his dad.

Overall I think LEGO have done a great job of capturing some classic moments with the 2812 pieces included in the set.

Included in the set is a whopping 18 minifigures: Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker in Bespin outfits, Chewbacca, C-3PO, Lando Calrissian, Lobot, 2 Cloud City Guards, 2 Cloud Car Pilots, Leia and Han in Hoth outfits, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, 2 Stormtroopers and an Ugnaught, plus R2-D2 and an IG-88 droid.’

You’ll also get small scale version of Slave I and a Twin-Pod Cloud Car.

Check out the full gallery and press release below. Australian RRP is $499.99. The set will be available to VIPs on September 13th and everybody else October 1st.

The set features 1966 pieces, a single minifigure and astromech droid.

I’m not the biggest fan of the Y-Wing but the level of detail looks impressive.

The Australian product page lists this as $299.99 and available for everybody May 4th.

You can see more images and set details below.

LEGO Announces 76105 Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition

Did you see the recent Infinity War set announcement and think to yourself that the Hulkbuster was way too small? Well it seems LEGO agreed with them today announcing 76105 LEGO Superheroes Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition.

This massive UCS Hulkbuster features 1,363 pieces and stands over 25cm high.

Included are two different arm options that can be swapped out. You don’t just get the Hulkbuster itself, with the set coming with a wonderful display stand based on Tony Stark’s workshop. It’s a great way to display the model.

As expected with a UCS style set there is a detailed information plaque sticker.

Of course the Hulkbuster needs somebody to pilot it and in this case it’s Iron Man in his MK 43 armour. There is even a MK 43 sticker for when you are displaying the set.

I personally didn’t see this coming but I think the end result looks pretty good. Will you be getting this set when it’s released March 3rd (No VIP release)? I have sent off an email asking about the Australian RRP but haven’t heard back as yet. I’d expect this to be around $199.99 locally. Update: The Australian RRP is confirmed to be $199.99.

There are heaps of additional pictures and the full press release below.

It’s Real – LEGO Announces New UCS Millennium Falcon

There is a line in The Force Awakens that I think is appropriate here… “It’s true, all of it”. After months and months of rumours, speculation, fake leaks, teasers and even some real leaks LEGO have today announced the largest ever LEGO set.

Introducing 75192 Millennium Falcon

MF75192_Prod

It’s hard to put in words just how amazing this set is. Here are the key points:

  • The set has 7,541 pieces.
  • Same external dimensions as the previous version
  • It comes with two sets of minifigures – Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and C-3PO based on Empire Strikes Back. From the sequel trilogy there is Older Han Solo, Rey and Finn.
  • The exterior has all new more accurate detailing.
  • There is multiple sections of detailed interior – Main hold with printed Dejarik board. Rear compartment with engine room and hidden compartment. Gunnery station with minifigure gunner’s seat.
  • The model can be configured in Original Trilogy or Sequel Trilogy formats – it includes a round dish and a rectangular one.

Words do little to describe the epicness of all this. So I suggest you check out the image gallery, press release and designer video below. Warning for mobile users: There are a lot of images and I left them quite large so that you can see all the details.

According to somebody I spoke to at LEGO the Australian RRP is $1299.99. The set will be officially released on October 1st, but there will be a VIP release on September 14th.
