How much is a minifigure worth?

LEGO Azog

San Diego ComicCon is always an interesting event for LEGO fans. The company always has a large presence there, and uses the event to announce new products. They also release a few exclusive items for people who attend the event, and these usually find there way to eBay at high prices. This year, something crazy is happening.

The Azog minifigure is selling on eBay for over $1500. Currently the auction is sitting at approximately AU $1,656.71 with a day still to go. The figure is limited to 100, but that just seems like an insane amount of money to spend on a single minifigure. Will the item retain it’s value in the future? There is also no way of knowing if the figure will appear in future sets. There are still 2 Hobbit movies to be released, and it is possible that a future set will contain the character. Would LEGO have really produced a new mould for 100 figures?

Of course Azog isn’t the first minifigure to shock people with it’s eBay prices. LEGO caused a lot of people to get upset by introducing Mr Gold to the series 10 minifigure collection. Bricking Around has witnessed the mess caused by this first hand – Series 10 packets spread from one end of the toy section to the other by people searching for Mr Gold.

LEGO Mr Gold

So far 1294/5000 Mr Gold figures have been found and registered online. There are undoubtedly more that have been found but went straight on eBay.

One Australian listing of Mr Gold is currently sitting at AU $640.00 with just 12 hours to go. Are those people lucky enough to find Mr Gold responsible for putting such a high price on the figure? It doesn’t seem so. This particular auction has 19 bids, and the starting price was just $0.99. It seems that the market thinks this figure is worth more than two modular buildings.

It really seems that there are two types of LEGO fans – those that love to build with LEGO, and those who like to collect it.

Bricking Around would love to know – what is the most you have ever paid for a minifigure, and what was it?
