There were rumors floating around in March this year that The Simpsons would be the newest theme for The LEGO Group, and now it appears to be confirmed. LEGO marketing director Mads Nipper stated “We’ll see Homer, Bart, Marge and the others next year”.
There was a lot of mixed opinions when the rumors first appeared, and those comments have started popping up again. It is certainly true that The Simpsons has touched on a lot of adult themes over it’s long lifetime (including drug use and alcohol addiction) but at its core there is a lot of family friendly content that can be explored. There are very adult themes in a lot of LEGO themes – for example Star Wars Episode III features Anakin Skywalker slaughtering children (admittedly this happens off-screen). The presence of mature content doesn’t rule out all elements of a franchise.
What sort of sets can LEGO fans expect? That will be the biggest surprise. The Simpsons has a huge cast characters and features locations from all over Springfield. Hopefully we will see iconic locations such as 742 Evergreen Terrace. One possible indication comes from the original article…
One of the most-loved, arch American families are now emerging as LEGO figures.
Could LEGO’s first Simpsons products be a minifigure series? This could actually make sense. It would allow LEGO to test the popularity of the theme without investing a lot of time on set design. It also allows for a large cast of characters to be introduced very quickly.
Whatever LEGO decides to do it seems it is going to be polarizing.
