This past weekend I was able to make the trip up from Brisbane to attend the Sunshine Coast Brick Event.
I took along my camera and took plenty of photos for those who couldn’t make it. Special thanks to my wonderful fiancée for letting me hijack 2 hours of our weekend away.
Check out the photos and review below.
Ticketing
Online tickets were available for the show, but the process was still not as straight forward as other events I have attended. On Saturday when I attended there was a reasonably long line, which did move quickly. It’s possible that a new ticketing system might get more people pre-paying, as it seemed to me that most attendees were buying tickets at the door.
My only other observation, and not a criticism, is that Brick Events may have reached a point were the shows need to be broken up in to sessions. It was very busy when I arrived, but a lot quieter by the time I left. Sessions may help spread the guests out evenly over the day.
The Venue
The show was held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre, which happened to be quite close to the accommodation I was staying at. I am not sure how central the location was for locals, but it seemed to be easy to get to. There also seemed to be a reasonable amount of parking around.
The venue was spacious, well lit and cool. The size allowed people to easily move around even when there were large crowds looking at the displays.
For Sale
As expected there was a decent selection of LEGO for purchase, and I saw plenty of children making their way out with something under their arms. There was a store with a great collection of minifigures and some loose parts.
The second seller was Bricks’n’Fun. There seemed to be a decent mix of old and new sets available but I was a little disappointed to see The Simpsons House priced at $429 (It is $329 with free shipping from LEGO Online)
There was also a store – Brick Chic – selling very nice handmade LEGO jewellery and accessories.
The MOCs
The show featured an outstanding collection of MOCs in a huge variety of themes. No matter what you are interested in there was something to be impressed by.
Some stand outs:
- Medieval Display – A nice large castle build and surrounding landscape full of minifigures.
- Fairytales – One that I had seen before but I am still impressed by. This clever MOC combines all of the well known fairy tale characters into a single scene.
- City – While City itself isn’t always the most impressive theme, this display had a few modified modulars that looked great.
This time it was really hard to pick a best in show, but I am going to have to give it to the LEGO City display. As an adult fan I was really impressed with the custom version of the Cafe Corner, the heavily modified corner Pet Shop and the expanded Grand Emporium.

Despite it being really busy when I attended, I still had a fantastic time at the show.
As one of the organisers at Brick Events, and the proud builder behind the City layout, I am glad you enjoyed our show.
We had 8,000 people over the two days and were truly amazed at the turnout the Sunshine Coast put on for us. All of our displayers and helpers thoroughly enjoyed themselves, even though we barely had time to breathe.
