It’s that time of year again – San Diego Comic Con. As usual LEGO are using the event as an opportunity to announce new sets. They have been spreading the news around to different media outlets, so here is a quick wrap-up of what we have seen so far.
75084 Wookie Gunship
Part of the new Star Wars Rebels cartoon, this set looks great. Wookie minifigures are always popular.
Protect Wullffwarro and his Jedi friend, Kanan Jarrus, with the powerful LEGO® Star Wars Wookiee Gunship. As featured in the Star Wars: Rebels animated TV series, this amazing battle-ready craft has loads of weapons to see off any invading force, like movable front cannons and an elevating top cannon. When the action really heats up, raise the wings into attack mode and unleash the never-before-seen rapid shooters! If you run low on ammo, open the side hatches to access the spare supply, then lower the rear bay door and unload the mobile gun post. Includes 4 minifigures with assorted weapons: Wullffwarro, Kanan Jarrus and 2 Wookiees. Available January 2015, 570 pieces, $69.99 USD.
LEGO: The Hobbit – The Lonely Mountain
Our first LEGO version of the iconic dragon Smaug. Lots of interesting features, and as expected plenty of gold parts.
The Lair of Smaug will showcase a secret door, an Arkenstone-encrusted throne, golden nuggets, treasures, assorted mining tools, conveyor belt, chain pulley to raise and lower bucket, furnace with a light brick, melting pot and torches with translucent flames. RRP is $129.99 USD.
76025 Green Lantern vs. Sinestro
The Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern takes on his nemesis Sinestro, with some help from his buddy Batman.
Coming in January 2015, Green Lantern vs. Sinestro (76025) is Hal Jordan’s time to shine. Space Batman is just there to supervise. RRP $19.95 USD.
I like the look of the Lonely Mountain but I’m scarred to find out what the price in Australia will be if it’s US$130.
Jules I am the exact same, $130 US scares me haha! As others on eurobricks and brickset pointed out I don’t think we’ve seen the whole set (though 800+ bricks is still pricey) as you can see the photo is cut off on the left. Smaug is the draw here but for me at least it won’t justify the price I’d rather get the Star Destroyer or Phantom + Ghost from the Star Wars line! That all been said I’m excited for the other three sets which if the rumors are true will be full of awesome minifigures which is all this Hobbit line has been about other then Bag End which was an awesome set (the rest are simply walls with awesome figs).
On a different note I love the Wookie Gunship it looks so different to all the typical ships we get year in, year out and the Green Lantern set is just phenomenal. I was so sick of pure batman sets these past few waves what a breath of fresh air!
In my experience, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit sets are massively overpriced in Australia, usually even more than other licensed themes. However, the sets sold by Big W were quite close to the US price. For example, they sold the Council of Elrond for $35 and Battle at the Black Gate for $60. Hopefully Big W will get all of the new Hobbit sets and they will follow the pricing scheme.
Wow really? That’s excellent pricing, especially compared to Myer where Elrond is $60 and Black Gate is $100. I’ve ended up just using Amazon to get The Hobbit and LOTR due to the crazy pricing here in AU.
Shea, the reason Big W is selling it at that price is because it’s on clearance. Big W does get the Hobbit Sets for one week only (at least this was the case last year) and each set was discounted by $10, Myer and Shopforme are the only two retailers that I know stock the Hobbit stuff however the Smaug set is going to be so absurd that’ll wait for a good deal on Amazon for it.
That’s a shame as I assumed it was simply part of Big W’s naturally low LEGO prices. I have also seen a few Hobbit sets at Toyworld, but they were at full RRP, similar to Myer.
I might be turning to Amazon and Bricklink for the next wave of Hobbit sets like I did for Mirkwood Elf Army. I will probably only be able to get the cheaper sets though.
Helm’s Deep also retailed for US $130, and was $200 in Australia, so we can expect somewhere around that for The Lonely Mountain.
