Welllll, I was planning to pop a brief overview on here, a first impression of the first couple of levels perhaps, an experience for which my son had been saving, bargaining and chore-ing it up like a boss for a few weeks to deserve, but alas, I have only a warning to pass on so far…
This game is bugged to the hilt, something which I have now found out has been well documented online over the last couple of days. Essentially you can’t get past the tutorial level, specifically when it comes to building the Batmobile, without downloading an update. The problem being the update seems to be taking an average of four hours for most people (myself included).
There are suggestions of restarting and trying to avoid the glitch, which we did about five times and which meant sitting through the un-skippable cut scenes each time. The cut scenes are charming and seem to be pitched as a pseudo sequel to the Lego Movie albeit with far more interesting worlds and a stellar void cast, but un-skippable is un-skippable, I mean I love Will Arnett but if I had to hear “you sat on my bat, man” one more time!!
Finally we go to play a bit of the game, but only because we happened to have the BTTF pack and it allows Marty to build his vehicles and proceed, but not Batman. I know this all sounds like a bit of a mess but on the bright side from what I can tell the game seems like its going to be a lot of fun, if only the developers were nice enough to allow me to play it.
Anyway, fair warning fellow gaming Dad’s, there is some preparation required before sitting down with our loved ones to play this thing and avoid being subjected to disappointment face.
Aside from all that there’s really only the astronomical price, endless add on packs and the fact that none of the builds come with instructions to complain about, but lets save something for next time 🙂
N.B. a brief counter point from my son “Dad, I know this has taken a few hours, but batman is flying around Oz on a hoverboard, this is awesome”….not sure I can argue with that.
Thanks for sharing your first impressions. Hard to argue with your son’s verdict 🙂
In regards to no instructions coming with the packs, apparently they will be releasing online versions in the near future. https://twitter.com/LEGODimensions/status/648627539003375616
Doing up a post about that now 🙂
Thanks for the your hands on first impressions Matt. That’s a bummer about the required, stupidly long, update. Constant updates on consoles are a pet peeve at the best of times! Can the update be done whilst building the portal etc? At least that might alleviate some kiddy stress for a while anyway. I bought it from Target this morning, before I saw the EBay 15% off on here, and now sadly I have to wait until my (daughters) birthday in a few weeks before my (her) surprise PS4 arrives : (
You’ll definitely have a great time with this once the update has been done Mark, its just unfortunate that it is so large and unavoidable, the bugs are legion :-). I really feel sorry for any families sitting down for some play time ‘out the box’, despite anything else it makes the first experience with the game frustrating, which can’t have been anyones intention.
After that though the charm is through the roof, the whole cross pollination of characters is implemented infinitely more successfully than the disney infinity games. The portal can be built before hand or when the game prompts you to, which is very early on. The instructions for the smaller builds can be accessed once you place each character on the portal and you choose your teams from there (any character you have, any level, any time)
At its core its basically the same as other lego games from TT, but one with a fantastic mix of characters, locations, ideas and an intuitive and easy to navigate play map (hub levels, story levels etc are clearly marked and accessed, which hasn’t always been the way with these games)
Enjoy
Thanks Matt, I really can’t wait to play this. My mind boggles just thinking about the potential interactions of some of my favourite movie, TV and game characters. With some of the licenses they have included, combined with tongue firmly in cheek humour, I think it’s pretty clear Dimensions will appeal just as strongly to adults as it will to kids!
Speaking for the PS4, I seriously cannot remember the last game I got that didn’t require a day one update – and I get quite a few. An unfortunate byproduct of marketing departments demanding finish dates for release, even of things aren’t finished. :\
As for skipping cutscenes, past LEGO games haven’t allowed it the first time, but on subsequent playthroughs you can.
Hmmm. I thought the PS3 was bad in the required update dept. It sounds like I’m in for more of the same with the PS4 then. I’m glad my broadband plan recently got the Netflix refurbishment treatment.
They can be sizeable too. I’m about as far from my exchange as one can be, so I get 2mbps if I’m lucky. I had a 17GB Destiny update last week which took several nights to come down. :\
Well this will be a better investment than skylanders. I have so many portals and figurines sitting unused and if you try selling them you get $2 for each one. The upside to Lego Dimensions is they say the portal will not need updating and the figurines will go up in value not down. So of course this is why I will be getting Lego Dimensions and not the new skylanders.
I originally said I wouldn’t buy Lego Dimensions, but I was Big W today and impressed by the sale so we decided to go for it. We got the Xbox 360 starter pack plus BTTF, Benny and Scooby Doo. After downloading an update for about 45 mins we were ready to play. So far my boys are loving it, and my 4 year old is enjoying moving the figures around the toy pad when it’s needed in the game. The light up feature is quite exciting for them too. Only downside is one of the blue toy tags that came in the add on sets in totally unresponsive, so I’ve emailed Lego to see if I need to return one set or if they will send out a new toy tag.
