LEGO At The South Pole

It may sound odd but right now there is LEGO on every single continent in the world. While for 6 out of 7 continents that isn’t much of a surprise, you don’t always see LEGO in Antarctica.

The Antarctic LEGO in question is a creation from two talented Australian LEGO Builders.

LEGO South Pole 03

Tim and his brother Jeremy both exhibit with Rainbow Bricks LUG to raise money for charities and entertain LEGO fans of all ages. This year they had a unique opportunity for one of their creations to be taken to the South Pole to spend the winter there. The brothers only had 2 days notice to design, build, and pack this vehicle to be taken on its epic journey.

The vehicle is a called a Pistenbully and this one features a radar mounted on a tire that hangs out in front of the vehicle. The radar looks down into the snow and checks for giant hidden crevasses that the South Pole vehicles might fall into.

The team at the South Pole have been kind enough to send back some photos of the creation as well as its real world counterpart. The people at the South Pole are locked in for the winter so the MOC won’t return home for another 8 months, but when it does get back it will be displayed at LEGO exhibitions to teach kids about the South Pole.

There are some more details for each photo below.

This is the real Pistenbully with a downward-looking radar to check for hidden crevasses in the snow that vehicles might fall into.

The back of the Pistenbully has some warning lights and some bamboo strapped to it, and a roof cage on the top. The tracks are very wide! We tried to replicate all of this.

Here is our Lego Pistenbully at the Geographic South Pole. You can make out the pole in front of the sign behind our Lego. Our little Lego snow explorer made it into the photo also!

The LEGO Pistenbully on the snow checking for crevasses! I love the snow in the tracks and the snow blowing around the air in front of it. I rarely see snow so it's fascinating to me.

This is the Ceremonial South Pole with the flags of the original Antarctic Treaty signatory states. Our Lego is sitting on top of the South Pole! This is approximately 180m from the Geographic South Pole.

Advance Australia Fair! It's an impressively harsh terrain.

Talking about LEGO on every single continent in the world, It has also made it out of this world with 3 Lego figures orbiting Jupiter this very moment on the Juno space probe! Cool story and pictures, excuse the pun.
