LEGO Launches New Augmented Reality App

Earlier today I watched an animated Lloyd fly a LEGO dragon around my workplace, shooting fireballs at the printer. This is the kind of fun you can have with the new LEGO AR Studio app, now available in the iOS app store.

The LEGO AR Studio uses your phone’s camera and sensors to place 3D LEGO sets in the real world. It’s kind of like Pokemon Go, but instead of Pokemon it features a selection of LEGO sets.

The initial selection of sets is fairly limited, but there are still some fun options. The current range includes LEGO City Police Station 60047, LEGO City Train Set 60052, LEGO City Fire Station 60110, LEGO Ninjago The Green NRG Dragon 70593, LEGO Ninjago Movie – Cole’s Mech 70632 and LEGO Ninjago Movie – Destiny’s Bounty 70618.

I had the Destiny’s Bounty sailing around the floor, complete with water effect.

The app is easy to use – it’s designed for younger LEGO fans after all. Upon opening you select a flat surface as your play area. It can be a little tricky to get the app to find the surface you want to use. Once the surface is mapped you can then start adding sets to the area. The sets feature various animated or interactive elements (such as making the dragon breathe fire).

The 3D models are very accurate to the sets and you can get up really close by moving your phone closer to where the set was placed.

For an extra level of playability the models also feature hidden Golden Bricks. There are 12 to collect currently. Also present in the app are buttons to capture photos and videos of your action.

The app is available on the following iOS 11 devices: iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and later, iPad (2017), iPad Pro (1st Generation and later). Unfortunately being an AR app not every device can run it.
