2017 Advent Calendars – Day 24 – City, Friends & Star Wars

Here they are – our final advent windows. Let’s check out what is in each and then at the end I’ll add a gallery of all 24 builds for the three calendars as well as my overall thoughts.

No surprises who is behind today’s City window. It’s the one and only Santa Claus. All of the elements on this minifigure are great – the beard, the hat, the sack element and even the face print with glasses. A great conclusion to the calendar.

My initial reaction when I opened this window was “Oh”, because I was really hoping we’d get another minidoll. Firstly because Stephanie must be getting lonely and secondly because I’d love a Santa minidoll. Even one of the Friends characters dressed as Santa would have been good.

This Santa snowman isn’t terrible when it’s not judged against what I wanted it to be.

Star Wars

It’s BB-8 Claus! I quite like the idea behind this window. I’d rate this a little higher if the BB-8 had a unique Christmas print but it’s still nice.

Final Thoughts

City

Some of the microscale builds in this calendar were fantastic, particularly the planes. The minifigures were also quite nice despite being a bit of an eclectic mix. I know that Coast Guard was a 2017 sub-theme for the City but to me they don’t really work with the winter snowscape of the advent calendar.

There was only really one build that I hated in this – the car where the wheels didn’t touch the ground.

Friends

How you feel about this calendar is likely going to depend on how you feel about Friends animals. There is only one minidoll and a lot of animals. Considering that the theme is called Friends it would have been nice if Stephanie had at least one non-animal friend to join her at Christmas.

The campfire build features two chairs but only one person to sit in them.

The weird pole thing / Friends weapon rack was probably a low point for me, as were any windows that just had a single animal or animal with one other element (eg the cat and fish).

Star Wars

To me this calendar was saved by some great microscale builds. The Y-Wing was particularly great, as was Rey’s speeder. For OT fans there was a distinct lack of builds. Some of the early windows featured characters and vehicles that not every Star Wars fan is going to know about. I appreciate that they are offering some variety but I’m not sure that Rebels is the best way to do that.

What did you think of this year’s calendars?

I was pretty disappointed with the city one to be honest. Last years had a few mini dioramas that made more of a christmas scene, this year was a lot of microbuilds and the ill fitting minifigs, nothing really tied together well.
