While we are still discussing our thoughts on The Flintstones Ideas set, LEGO has been hard at work on the next review.
In a bit of a surprise two sets have made it through the review and will become official LEGO sets at some point in the future.
Here’s a quick recap of the projects that were in the review…
Here are the results…
Steamboat Willie
I did not expect this one to pass because of the Disney licence involved. Also the black and white colour scheme may not translate well to the real world.
The Central Perk Coffee of Friends
I gave this one a pretty much 0% chance of passing. It seems I was completely wrong. Big Bang theory you could kind of justify because the characters are geeks who regularly mention and play with LEGO. It was still in production when the set was made. Friends ended in 2004 and it was a show that I don’t feel really translates to a LEGO set. It’s also going to be really confusing when you say “the LEGO Friends set” now.
Here’s a recap of what didn’t pass…
One of the Steamboat Willie figs leaked on instagram a few weeks ago, so that one doesn’t really come as a surprise. Definitely my favourite among the options here. The Friends one though, jeez, anything else would’ve been more suitable IMO. I wouldn’t be surprised if it sells even worse than the Big Bang set
It’s a very weird selection of sets that got through to this review round, not sure I would have wanted to buy any of them to be honest. The Rolls Royce Engine was probably the one with most interest from me. Steamboat Willie and the Friends Coffee shop are both really ordinary. Not to take anything away from the designers, just surprised they got to 10000 let alone approved for production. Will be interesting to see the final products.
Love the idea of the friends set. Despite it finishing in 2004 the show still has plenty of followers. I’m buying as soon as it comes out ????
Super bumbed that the ISS model didn’t make it. It looks great. Not much of a fan of either of those that did. Oh well.
I’m a massive Friends fan and a massive Lego fan but the set looks boring. I have no desire to buy it…unless the Lego designers do the opposite of what they did with Flintsones and actually make it much better than the fan submission.
Personally, neither of these sets appeals (I wanted more space :)), but it’s great to see the continued investment in Ideas by TLG and the variety in sets released. Crossing fingers for the piano in the next wave ;).
