LEGO Announces 71044 Disney Train and Station

I’ve heard rumours floating around for a while about an up-coming Disney Train set but I certainly wasn’t expecting what we get with 71044 Disney Train and Station.

Here’s the official details…

The set features 2925 pieces and 5 exclusive minifigures.

The train is motorised with new Powered Up elements, allowing you to control it with your smart device. As you would expect an oval of track is included.

You also get an impressive looking station. The station is a huge surprise to me and I think they have packed in a lot of details both externally and internally.

The 5 exclusive minifigures are Mickey, Minnie, Chip, Dale and (finally) Goofy. Each minifigure has a design not found in other sets or the CMF series.

Here’s the bad news though – the official Australian RRP for this $549.99. The combo of Disney and Powered Up elements combining for a big hit to your wallet. VIP release is August 21st.

Beautiful set, but ugly price! That’s crazy! $330 USD = $490 AUD not $550.
Love the details and fabulous looking train! Let’s hope this goes to retail so we can get a decent sale price on it!

Don’t forget that US prices don’t include tax as it varies by state. Add 10% to that $490 and you are pretty close to the AU price.

It is expensive but based purely on USD to AUD conversion the price is ‘fair’ if you consider our price includes GST and the US price is minus sales tax. I wouldn’t expect it to hit non-LEGO store retail any time soon either or go on discount if the Disney Castle is anything to go by.

I absolutely love it, but yes, really hoping it hits retail. Still hoping for the castle to eventually come to retail as well. However, as stunning as the castle is, I prefer this. It is absolutely beautiful.

I would have expected a modular for that price… 71040 has 4080 pieces for $499, where as this has 2925 pieces for $549… would love to add this set to my collection but LEGO got the price incredibly wrong.

I am by no means defending the price as it is ridiculous but if you look at the majority of licensed sets they never reach 10c per piece unless on discount. This price seems about right for a licensed Disney product with motor functions. I would suggest that due to how long 71040 has been out, that if LEGO were to release that set today it would sit more around the $650 mark but at the time of its release LEGO was not as popular as now so it is cheaper. What is the biggest wrought with this set is that it is the first time that Goofy makes an appearance, a beloved character that I am sure many would love to own, so making him exclusive to a $550 set seems to be out of step with the spirit of LEGO.

Absolutely love it and am a massive Disney fan, but this is so expensive for the piece count. I know it is powered but would have been nice if the powered parts were not included in the set and could have been purchased optionally instead. Due to the price a set I would have bought without blinking I will now not be so sure about buying.

This includes powered up components, so price to part isn’t a great measure in this case … still super expensive.

The $A has taken a hit recently, and Lego would need to ensure they weren’t losing if it continues to fall. We’ve had some favourable conversions lately and to be honest, this one isn’t bad. It’s a pity this set doesn’t have the Powered Up as an option rather than mandatory – these components can be purchased cheaply on special with sets like 60197 Passenger Train. The set looks awesome and would be great in a display with the castle. Do I need yet more trains? Hell yeah :).

Does anyone know if the Disney Castle 71040 has ever been sold retail or has it always only been exclusive to Lego. ?

    • Sam Reply

Has only ever been exclusive to LEGOShop@Home since its release in July 2016 & the LEGO certified stores in Melbourne & Gold Coast. I’ve now decided to buy it with VIP points as I’m always fearing its inevitable retirement.

$550! That’s $50 MORE than the Disney Castle.

I’d have to see it “side by side” with the castle, but I just don’t think it could possibly have the same visual appeal / impact as the castle. Let alone the same amount of building joy.

I was hoping for a set which represented much better value for money than this. I want Lego to make more Disney D2C sets, but I can’t justify spending $550 on this set to show Lego that there is demand for large Disney sets.
