TEST DRIVE: Technic 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader

The LEGO Technic 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader is a Control+ set, meaning that you can control the finished model with a phone or tablet. I am not a huge Technic fan but this set looked like one worth getting. Check out the video below where I took the finished model for a test drive…

I am still not a fan of the Technic build experience. I find it a bit too fiddly dealing with all those pins. Having said that, this set kicks ass. The end result is massive and looks fantastic. The real magic happens when you connect your phone or tablet. The controls are easy but the precision can be a little hard to perfect. That’s not a huge problem – it’s LEGO you can just put it back together if you crash it too badly.

The set is not particularly fast, but I don’t think speed is the goal here. This thing is designed for climbing over rocks not racing in a straight line. It’s good at what it’s meant to do.

Overall I think this set is a must buy for Technic fans, and one worth considering for everybody else.

This set was provided to me by LEGO at my request. Opinions are my own.

Managed to pick this up at Amazon at close to 40% off after Christmas, after initially deciding it was too expensive at RRP. I enjoy Technic builds and this one didn’t disappoint. There are tutorials on YouTube on how to change the gearing to make it faster, but it’s fine as it is. Not totally sold on the app, and there’s no way currently to control the hub in a MOC. Given I have zero creative ability, the latter isn’t a showstopper ;).
