31115 Space Mining Mech – The most controversial set of 2021?

LEGO has dabbled with mining themes and sub-themes before, but in almost all of those past sets there was one thing missing – the native inhabitants who are having their lands ripped apart. The Creator 3-in-1 Space Mining Mech fixes that omission.

The set depicts a future where humanity is using mechs to rob alien worlds of their mineral wealth.

I mean look at this poor little green guy. He’s clearly perturbed by what is going on.

Imagine you are just chilling on your planet with your awesome green crystals when suddenly a giant robot shows up with a spinning blade of doom for a hand. I’d be unhappy about that. Who wouldn’t?

Of course I might be misreading this one. Let’s see what LEGO’s website has to say:

Creative kids can use the mech toy to compete with an alien for crystals

Compete?! How on Earth/Unnamed alien planet is this tiny little green guy meant to compete with the giant mining mech?

Somebody at LEGO clearly got the wrong message from Avatar. The miners were the baddies!

Of course, I’m just being hyperbolic for a bit of a laugh (and a bit of clickbait). 31115 is actually a really great mech. Yes its not the biggest but I really enjoyed the build. There is also a perfect balance between articulation and stability.

And at the end of the day the end result looks awesome. Which is what matters right?

The only negative is that I would have loved to see a minifigure pilot to truly make this a mech rather than just a robot.

Alternate Builds

This is a 3-in-1 set so you will also get instructions for two alternate models. I didn’t build all 3 so the following is just based on the set pictures.

4 Legged Cargo Carrier

Another interesting build. Some nice articulation and I like the claws at the front. Overall though I don’t think this is as good as the mech.

2 Legged Mech

I guess they couldn’t release this as a 2-in-1 set? I am really not a fan of this one. This mech skips every day except leg day.

Final Thoughts

For a set that is available for under $25 I really like this one. It’s a fun build that’ll keep you engaged until it’s done. The B and C models aren’t the best but the main model is cool enough to separate you from your $25.

Buying guide

Your best bet for this set is probably Amazon [affiliate link] or Kmart. Both should have it listed for $22.

You won’t be able to beat that price with a regular sale at another retailer.

‘A bit of a laugh’ you say? Alien rights is no laughing matter, they need to be protected! Look whats happening on Mars, there’s now no martians left and we keep sending those Rover mechs over to rip its minerals and rock samples from the planet.

Well, considering our planet has been under attack from Martians since 2011 (Set #7052), it’s about time we took back the control of the universe and all the small fragments of TNG (trans-neon-green) we can harvest.
