LEGO Masters 2022 – Episode 13 Recap

It’s almost time to crown the winner of LEGO Masters 2022 but there are too many teams. Let’s find out who is going to miss a spot in the final.

The challenge is called “Sky’s the limit”. Each team gets a suspended cloud and they have to do a full 360 degree build around it. It has to be something that makes sense being in the clouds.

Teams have 14 hours. That’s a long build. Caleb rightfully points out that 14 hours means expectations are going to be high.

The clouds are massive.

Alex and Caleb are doing a fisherman catching birds for his fat cat. It’s a fun story, the challenge is going to be getting the characters perfect.

Joss and Henry are doing an Aztec Sky God. Brickman is worried it’s the same thing we’ve seen from them before. He does have a point. They do like to build a creature.

Nick and Gene are doing Rainbow Castle. The idea is that the castle is the source of rainbows. They are adding power functions to make it seem like their castle is flying through the sky.

Lexi and Rachael are doing Weather Station. It’s a minifigure scale world where the days weather is decided. They are planning a spinning wheel that determines what the weather is randomly. Getting this moving will be key to this build.

Joss and Henry are having lots of doubts about their build. This is not the time to be having doubts.

Alex and Caleb have a boat. The scale looks great and I love that you can see the bottom of it poking out through the bottom of the cloud.

Rachael tests their weather wheel and feel that it’s too heavy to successfully motorise. Looking at it I am not sure why it would be something beyond motorisation. If they can’t get it spinning they are absolutely in trouble.

Hamish asks the teams how they are doing and they are all doing alright except for Joss who is freaking out. I can’t imagine the pressure he’d be feeling.

Brickman stops by to give Joss and Henry a pep talk. Which is ironic considering he was the one that made them doubt themselves in the first place.

Jordie shows up from a secret entrance in the brickpit to do some cleaning. It’s a fun break from the stress for our teams.

Brickman stops by to crush Alex and Caleb’s spirits. He says their fisherman is too tall. Some people are tall Ryan jeez.

In the brickpit Rachael builds some sunglasses in a cute little back and forth with Nick. It’s almost flirty. Then back at the desk we see Lexi fail to recognise the sunglasses. It’s some deliberate editing to show the incompatibility of Lexi and Rachael.

Brickman suggests that Joss and Henry rotate their build so their creature is at an angle. Seems like a huge risk.

Alex and Caleb have shortened their fisherman and have some cute bird builds. Brickman stops by to crush their build. Literally this time. While looking at the arms of their fisherman he breaks them. Thankfully it seems like a minor issue.

Brickman alerts Joss and Henry to the fact that of the 4 teams they are the only one that doesn’t have something underneath their cloud.

There’s an hour to go and Lexi and Rachael are trying to get their weather wheel attached. They are trying to have it connected with a single technic rod and it’s too heavy. There’s tears from Rachael trying to work out how to fix the problem.

Nick and Gene’s motorised castle looks amazing. Their rainbows don’t line up. Doubt that will be a dealbreaker.

Rachael and Lexi get their wheel attached to the tower. It doesn’t spin but at least it’s there.

Time is up and one team is about to find out they aren’t making it to the grand finale.

Alex and Caleb

What a cracking build. I love everything about this. The story is ridiculous and hilarious but it’s all really well executed. If there was a winner tonight this would be my pick. Huge momentum going in to tomorrow.

Lexi and Rachael

I quite like the story idea but I think it really needed that spinning wheel to draw the eye and really sell the story. Probably in trouble.

Nick and Gene

A great castle with an absurd story and some great moving elements. The only negative is that the rainbow at the bottom and the rainbow on the bridge don’t line up. I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker though because the rest of it is so good.

Joss and Henry

It’s a really impressive creature. The only issue is that it feels a lot like the first build they did. Visually it’s striking and obviously well executed.

Results

Alex and Caleb are rightfully the first team through to the final. Smashed it today. These two could sneak in and take it out from the early favourites tomorrow.

The next team through are Nick and Gene. I knew that rainbow wouldn’t matter.

Joss, Henry and Rachael are all huddled together while Lexi stands by herself. It’s SO awkward.

Henry and Joss are through to the final. They didn’t have much of a story to their build tonight but sheer technical skill got them over the line tonight. If they’d got the wheel spinning this could have gone the other way tonight. Maybe.

It’s going to be an intense finale tomorrow night and I can’t wait to see which team takes out the title.
